Welcome to the 2010 boating season. As your commodore I look forward to serving our club and advancing connections to the boating community, particularly those on the south shore of Lake Erie. We have had two very successful events and another colourful sail past complete with piper. As each of us prepare for this boating season, our holidays, and trips onto and across the lake I would like to remind everyone that this club relies on participation by its members for success. Please review the events and choose how you can serve and represent your club at a function. I encourage everyone to attend and to spread the word to ensure we have attendance at each and every event. I encourage everyone to have a safe, enjoyable boating season and look forward to seeing you on the water.

Hello All

I went to the Port Dover LCBO this weekend to discover that any event held by LPBYC in the pavilion at PDHM only qualifies for a permit if LPBYC buys the liquor from the LCBO/Beer Store and either sells it, smart serve qualified staff, or gives it away. Therefore there is no permit that would permit our club to have its members bring their own liquor without violating the law. Our club events, hosted at the pavilion will have to be alcohol free. Any member choosing to bring liquor does so at their own risk. If the club wishes to have an event with liquor it will have to held at a licensed premises such as the Brig.

I have informed Janet that Norfolk County was incorrect if they were suggesting that a special occasion permit would cover a club, its members and the PDHM for the consumption of personal liquor. Janet will be taking this back to the Norfolk County office.

Getting The Girl Ready for the Dance

Hello LPBYC Members;

Launch season is quickly approaching and we will all be very busy getting our ladies ready for the big day. Now is a good time to do some work that can be done at home prior to launch day. Bring home items that can easily be removed for cleaning and/or repair. One of the things most taken for granted is our various on board lines and running rigging.

Each weekend all summer we arrive at the dock and our first function is to wash down the boat to get off that previous weeks accumulation of dirt and bird deposit that we know will be abrasive to our decks and hulls. However, we usually neglect our lines and running rigging in the cleaning process. This is understandable as they are not shiny and difficult to clean. The problem is that all that dirt and grim that you diligently remove from your vessel weekly can have a major affect on the interior integrity of the lines through internal chaffing if not removed. Now is the time to bring those lines home and wash them in the washing machine. When completed the lines are free of most of the abrasive dirt and grime, look almost new and feel almost new as well when handled.

This is what I suggest. Check your lines to be sure that the ends are secure and not frayed. A frayed line indicates the core is separated from the protective sheath exterior. To prevent this, the ends should be whipped, heat sealed (melted) or heat sealed and then dipped in a whipping compound such as Starbrite Dip-it Whip-it liquid vinyl. Failure to do this can cause the core to exit through the sheath along the lines length during the washing process, similar to the steps used when splicing an eye in the line.

Coil the lines to be washed and put them individually into a mesh laundry bag. I found mine at the local dollar store complete with zipper enclosures. If you use bags with tied enclosures be sure you tie them well, (Something in the washing machine knows how to untie the knots). By using the bags you will keep the lines from coiling around each other and creating a headache straightening every thing out when they removed from the machine. The bags we have are about 12” x 15” and work for most situations. The coils will still get tangled in the bag but at least you are only dealing with one line. If you want to combine some smaller lines in one bag, I suggest the lines be of different diameters for easier separation. Remove any hardware attached to the lines or cover them with material so that the machine will not be damaged.

Only insert enough bags to cover the bottom of the wash machine tub so as not to over load the machine. Set the level for the lowest setting and longest wash cycle with hot water wash and warm water rinse. DO NOT USE BLEACH! Add wash detergent suitable for your machine and start the machine. After the cycle is complete including the spin process, rewash again if necessary or remove them from the bags, recoil them and let them air dry. DO NOT USE THE DRYER! You will find that the lines will be like new and will provide many more years of service.

Exterior sheath chaffing is often experienced at the fairleads on dock lines. I have seen many boaters use a piece of hose slid over the line at the fairlead location to provide protection. This works, but can slide out of place when the boat moves at the dock. I use clear shrink tube that is available from most electrical suppliers. Simply cut it to length, slide it over the line to where you need it and shrink it into place with a hair dryer. If you currently have a dock line with a minor sheath abrasion the shrink tube works well to cover this spot and prevent further damage. If you want a thicker coating, slide a second piece of shrink tube, slightly longer than the first (minimum ½” overlap each end) over the first and shrink it into place. Remember most of the line strength is in the core, the sheath is provided to protect the core and your hands from abrasion. There could be lots of life left in that old line yet.

Hello and welcome to boaters for the 2009 season. It is with great pleasure that I want to recognize and thank the Long Point Bay Yacht Club for electing me to represent our excellent club for this year! I, as I am sure many of my friends and fellow boaters, eagerly await spring and the opportunity to again take to the waters for recreation, cruising or just relaxation. I have been an avid boater for the past ten years, first as a power boater and now a sailor cruising in Lake Superior and now Lake Erie. I look forward to representing the Long Point Bay Yacht Club as commodore and hope that our club, through its members and executive, will continue to enjoy the camaraderie of boating. It is my desire to heighten the profile of our yacht club with enhanced publicity for our sail past, as well as attending and encouraging sister clubs to use our reciprocal agreement to visit Port Dover. The club has planned a number of events over the course of the season and I encourage everyone to join in, get involved, to renew friendships, getting to know new members, and assisting the event coordinators. At this time I would like to wish everyone a safe, enjoyable, memory filled summer of boating!

This is to confirm the receipt of your email regarding the above-noted by Norfolk County and to advise that it was circulated to the Council of Norfolk County and Senior Management for their review and consideration. Council found all of the information received in numerous emails with respect to the Harbour Marina operations to be very informative.

Please be advised that Council, upon consideration of the proposed 2009 Port Dover Harbour Marina fees, passed the following resolution at its Regular Meeting on January 13, 2009:

“THAT, the proposed 2009 User Fees and Service Charges for the Port Dover Harbour Marina be approved with the following changes:

1. Dockage fees be increased by 3% over the 2008 rates.

2. The surcharge for electricity for boats with air conditioners only be $ 50.00.

We are pleased to provide you with some information that will help make your presentation to Council or Council-In-Committee effective. All Council and Council-In-Committee meetings of Norfolk County are televised. There is frequently an audience at our meetings. It is therefore necessary to follow certain procedures to ensure that your presentation is seen and heard by the Council and Council-In-Committee members, the television audience and the audience in the gallery. Deputations are limited to ten minutes. The following are our suggestions for making an effective presentation:

Provide Information to County Clerk

Provide a copy of your presentation to the County Clerk either prior to or at the meeting.

The County Clerk may be contacted at bev.wood@norfolkcounty.ca or 519-426-5870, Extension 1228. If you are providing a Powerpoint presentation please e-mail a copy to the Clerk by Monday morning prior to the meeting to ensure that it is set up for you when you arrive at the meeting.

Speak through the Chair

When addressing Council/Council-in-Committee or answering a question, regardless of where the question came from, you should always address your comments to the Mayor or Chair. This maintains order in the meeting. The Mayor is addressed as Mayor Travale, Mr. Mayor or Your Worship and the Chair of Council-In-Committee can be addressed as Chair.

Speak into the Microphone

When addressing Council/Council-In-Committee or answering a question, always use the microphone.

· If you must move from your position to use a microphone, please move to the microphone before you begin speaking.

· If you have moved back to a seat in the gallery and you are asked another question, please return to the microphone to respond.

Test your Presentation Materials before the Meeting

Make sure your Presentation will be visible

When preparing any drawing or document to project using the document camera, or digital projection, you should make sure the text of the diagram will be visible in the Council Chambers. This means that any text or diagram on sheet or overhead is large. If you want your presentation on the screen to be legible for the audience the words on the document or drawings on the sheet of paper should be legible from a distance of 8 feet away (This means using a minimum font size of 24)

Norfolk County Proposed Marina Operations

Normally, I finish each year by renewing my slip, paying my deposit for the next boating season. I have not done this yet, because I have not received the renewal forms. I have made inquiries to why, and have learned (through my efforts, not proactive measures by the Marina), that the reason I have not got my renewal forms, is because the Marina Board resigned. The County Government is going to run the Marina and is proposing a 20% increase for dock fees and a 5% increase for electricity. I have also learned that there is a town hall type meeting scheduled for Jan.13/09. My facts may be wrong, but I have not been given the courtesy of the Marina informing me of the correct facts even though I have been a customer for 10 years. If it were run like a proper business, a letter of intent would have been sent even if it were to say, we are reviewing our policies and will get back to you later.

I suppose the County Government strategy is to delay informing its customers of the proposed increased in the hopes of blindsiding boat owners, or perhaps they just not up to the task of running the marina? We recently had a large increase, is another one warranted due to the current economic circumstances? The members of the Port Dover Harbor Marina are primarily middle class families that struggle with the same issues as everyone else, rising gas prices, taxes etc, and have limited resources to dedicate to our boating activity. The Marina Board would know this if they studied their fuel sales for the last few years. The increase in fuel cost has limited the usage of boats. It appears the County Government is looking for more money, without taxing its voters. Well guess what? I vote with my wallet, in the stores and restaurants around Port Dover, and I have a limited amount of resources, if I didn’t then I would have a boat on Georgian Bay.

Suppose you increase the rates 20% and lose 20% of the boats,

Your net result:

to the Marina is loss of revenue of 4%,
but your costs don’t decrease, the grass still needs to be cut,
the community impact is far greater.

That is:

20% less people at the Marina,
20% less work for Bridge Marine, Dovercraft etc.
20% less marina customers at the Restaurants, drinking establishments, theatre, shops, and the farmers market.

I would suggest that amount is far greater, even more because hardly a weekend goes by that we don’t have guests. The guests at times book hotel rooms, shop in the craft stores, and eat in the restaurants. Most other boaters have visitors as well.

For those that do stay, they have 20% less money to spend, perhaps they bring their food, don’t go out to see live entertainment, so it becomes a slippery slope. Businesses have fewer customers, need fewer employees, and it recesses from there. Is this the course the County Government wants to chart?

It is estimated that a dollar gets multiplied (some say up to 8 times in a community) so the loss to business could be much more substantial when you consider the three fold decrease:

less boats,
less visitors to boats,
less disposable income for those that stay.

A business needs to balance several items to maximize the net over all benefit to the shareholders, and this is a business. The County Government’s plan has not considered the net effect to the loss of revenue to the businesses and residents (the shareholders) of the town of Port Dover, they have missed the big picture.

So here is the big picture. The Marina is a cash cow which brings money into the community. The County Government needs to balance how they want to milk the cow, because their current course of action will kill the cow, and dead cows don’t give milk.

Geoff as we spoke on the phone today we attended a meeting put on by Cliffside Yacht Club to address the proposed 20% rate increases. This meeting was for all interested parties.

Fall General Meeting

The AGM was held Sunday September 21/08 at the Brig, and several items were up for discussion under new business. The actual minutes of the meeting will not be published here, but two items of consideration under new business will be presented for club discussion for those of you that missed the meeting.

Firstly, Steve Redmond will be chairing a committee to study the feasibility of having a de-defibrillator at the marina. The suggestion was made to keep the de-defibrillator at the gas dock, to help power boaters deal with sticker shock of filling their tanks. Clear!

Secondly, the club has presented a cheque to cover the initial costs of setting up the wireless internet access at the marina. The new executive will decide on the position going forward. Currently there is a committee to study the feasibility of how this wireless will work going forward. Contact Geoff Sanders, the Chairman of the committee should you want to be involved in this decision.

Hi everyone.
This is my first communication and I would like to thank-you for having me as the Commodore for the 2008 boating season. The club voted in a great group of people for the executive and committee chairs.
The Executive has been meeting over the winter working out the summer events and has come up with a great list of events for your enjoyment.
Our first General Membership meeting will be the 2008 spring meeting on April 20 @ 1:00 PM. We will be up dating you on the social and cruising events at that time. Also, this year there is a Constitutional vote, hope you can be at the meeting or send your proxy with one of your friends.
The weather, hasn't been so great, but rumour has it that May should be warmer (15-20 degrees). Now that's more like boating time and great way to start our 2008 year.
I'm a person who likes to talk, so please come see me at Dock 3-slip 1 anytime or email me via donnaf61@cogeco.ca, or through the LPBYC website. Any suggestions or comments would be great way to have the club run even better. People, the club is your place to have fun, and your input is needed and appreciated.

Commodore’s Message September 2007

Hello fellow members. The season is quickly coming to a close. Fall is in the air. I hope you have had a safe and happy summer. We sure kept you busy with the club’s social calendar and we still have the closing dance and the Flamboro Races in November. Prepare yourself for a wonderful dinner and put on your dancing shoes. We have live music this year. Don’t forget to pick your nominee for the ‘Bent Prop Award’. Of course we don’t wish for any mishaps but there always seems to be some kind of incident. November we will meet at the Flamboro Races.

The spirit of this club has certainly been demonstrated this year with the great attendance at the events. I personally want to thank those of you who gave all the nice words of praise throughout the season. When I took on the position as Commodore, I was assured from the Executive and directors that I would get support from them. I must commend those who have the experience of the history of this club. They are a great asset and have been great to work with.

It is now that time, when we will be piling up our summer supplies in the carts and trying to fit it all into our vehicles to be stored for another winter. Next, we will be seeing each other hauling out our boats, winterizing and tarpping. Or maybe we will get a nice Indian Summer for some nice boating weather.

Don’t forget though, we will see each other at the Races in November and watch for plans for a winter rendezvous.

Nexus Update

I am pleased to inform you that on September 27, 2007 Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day announced that the NEXUS enrolment centres (ECs) and automated self-serve kiosks are now operational at all eight major Canadian airports (http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/travel/nexus/air-aerien-e.html) with United States (U.S.) pre-clearance facilities.

“Canada’s Government is proud to announce that Edmonton International Airport is now accepting NEXUS members,” said Minister Day. “This is another concrete action taken by our government to increase border security while maintaining the smooth flow of legitimate trade and travel to the United States.”

The NEXUS Air pilot project, which was launched at Vancouver International Airport in 2004, was very successful. NEXUS in the air mode uses non-invasive iris recognition technology to identify the traveller and verify his or her membership in the program. When members arrive in the CBSA hall or U.S. pre-clearance area at participating airports, they can go directly to the automated self-serve kiosk. They do not need to go through the primary inspection lines.

The U.S. has also accepted the NEXUS card as an alternative travel document to the passport under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative air rule.

NEXUS in the land mode began in the British Columbia/Washington corridor in summer 2002. NEXUS is currently operating at 11 border locations and the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) are working together to expand NEXUS to additional land border crossings.

This past April, NEXUS in the marine mode was launched across Canada. Recreational boaters who are NEXUS members can meet their border clearance obligations by calling a Canadian or U.S. telephone reporting centre 30 minutes (minimum) and up to four hours (maximum) before their expected arrival in Canada or the U.S.

And, as of August 2007, NEXUS applications can be completed online using Global Online Enrollment System (GOES), the U.S. CBP’s GOES for its frequent traveller programs. Access to GOES is available through the NEXUS Web site. To make it even more convenient to apply, Canadians can now also obtain a NEXUS application form at their nearest Canada Post outlet and at select Canadian Automobile Association offices throughout Canada.

Erie Rendezvous

The Red Neck Party was a big hit for the LPBYC, with many “pseudo” celebrities making an

appearance. We had

Clint Black, a.k.a Stratocaster Styan strutting his stuff, we had Jack Black and his crew from the Black Pearl doing their Beer run from ship to ship. Also present was Kay Lee who span generations of red necks by combining Edith Bunker and Peg Bundy and there was the understudies from the trailer park boys. Thankfully, the Ballantyne’s showed up with a full contingent of

genomes so the deep

end of the gene pool was well represented,

and it

balanced out a rather obtuse crew.

The band played into the evening with the club enjoying the music and dancing the night away. The evening was exciting but missed

the excitement of

past Erie rendezvous, there was no Anna S, jamming with the band,and Allistar was

was absent, so the “rocky raccoon” didn’t have a dance partner either. Missing too was Norm and Krys, and our thoughts are with them

as they deal with the loss of his brother.

The Sunday was spent in the lagoon, over cloudy skies, we got there late as Donna needed to do more shopping. We returned Monday under 20% showers, for those of you that missed it, not to worry, I managed to get your 20% as well as my own. Guess its time to get some canvas, or look at a bigger boat, rumor has it there are a few for sale.

The Erie Rendezvous this year is being organized by Graham of Fearless. So far over 20 boats have planned the weekend to attend and enjoy the "Red Neck" hospitality of our brethren at the Erie Yacht Club. Don't forget to check the website for your weather forecast before leaving. Donna and myself are planning on leaving on Friday most likely heading to the lagoon, with Saturday being the fall back position. We would welcome the company, but we are one of the slower boats in the fleet so it might not be too much fun spanking us across the lake. See you Erie at the red neck shin dig.

Included with the Erie Rendezvous is the usual jocularity, but also a special surprise revealed at the Rendezvous. You don't want to miss it.

Guess Who's Coming To Dinner

Everybody had fun at the Gala event, and although we did not have tickets to attend, the Commodore made measure to see to it that we enjoyed a dinner aboard one of the premier thoroughbreds in the stable. We enjoyed a dinner aboard Offshore Account with our host Jody and Wayne, Patricus was there as well as, some work mates of the Captain. Dinner was a wonderful combination of chicken, rice and asparagus, the conversation was .....interesting as we quizzed Capt Wayne 's guests about there professional vocation, and how their instructor was as a teacher. Jody's patented laugh could be heard reverberating throughout the hull.Hard to get much from Captain Wayne, but boy is he observant! If you ever get the opportunity to enjoy happy hour with Capt Wayne and Jody, make sure you take the opportunity.

The BBQ was well attended just like last year, although this year we had steaks for all. Murray and the BBQ Musketeers served up the steaks to perfection. Tom managed to capture some video which we hope to uploaded on the website soon. Mary demonstrated a balancing technique which Lourens and myself attempted with out success.
